Customer Reviews

So far, so goodWe're happy with these wall hangers so far. It hasn't been very long since we installed them, but they seem fairly sturdy for our 44 lb kayaks.Several reviews mentioned the included hardware being sub-par and some people even attached a 2x4 to the wall and then attached the wall hangers to that. We thought we would follow suit with getting brand new screws from the hardware store and we tried to attach the 2x4s first...This didn't end so well for us. The 2x4s would not screw in to the studs no matter what we did. We even had issues with the "higher quality" hardware store screws stripping out. Since the screw holes in the brackets ARE too wide for both screws to go into the stud, we ended up just making sure one side went into the stud and used the drywall anchors on the other side.So far, they're holding up pretty well and are very easy to use. Will update if we find our kayaks on the floor some day... 5Great product but lousy screws and no instructions - so watch outJust installed this on the outside of my deck rails. It gets 4 stars for being fundamentally a good product.ADVICE: 1. Buy some galvanized screws to use this outdoors, and use your own high-quality screws otherwise. 2. Don't screw it in until you've aligned the two sections and set the machine screws in to join and anchor them.First issue: The "brass (not)" metal screw head screwed right off one of the screws (see photo). I had even pre-drilled a hole into the soft wood and was using moderate torque by hand to screw this in. It should not have thwarted these screws, but the top portion screwed right off. (I managed to extract it with locking pliers.) I then realized these screws were not galvanized so I dug around and found deck screws that I used instead. That problem was solved. There are no instructions (see photo) but the process seemed pretty straightforward at first. Screw in the bottom piece, put the top in it and screw in the top. Oops. There are two machine screws that connect the two parts. I probably should have realized this beforehand, but there were no pictures or instructions to jog my mind. Now I had both parts screwed in, on both of them, one sitting atop the other, but the center holes did not align and I couldn't get the machine screws into them; they hit the interior tubes and that was that. So I dug around and found two stubby bolts with machine threads that at least acted like anchors. I may one day go back and drill a hole through the metal and put the original ones in there. Meantime, I'll cover the bolt heads that still stick out so they don't scratch my kayak.A job that should have taken about 20 minutes took an hour and a half.To the manufacturer: Please put a few instructions in here. Easy peasy few steps would have prevented this. And upgrade your screws so they're higher quality and galvanized -- for indoor/outdoor use. Don't assume people know how to install via osmosis, or, even if they DO have a whole lot of experience (like me), that they don't need a reminder due to cold weather head-clog (as it happened to me) or to just not doing these things all the time. 4It's really nice because sheI hung my girlfriends Future Beach Fusion 10 with these. The hole pattern is so wide, it's impossible to have all of the screws in a stud which is a minor complaint and worth knocking a star off for. I'm also not a big fan of the screws that came with it but that's not worth a star. That's just my personal preference for torx heads. I installed this with torx heads screws out of my stash but the screws that came with it are plenty sufficient.Having said all of that, she has had her kayak hung up since December (about 4 months) and she hasn't had any issues. It's really nice because she, a 120 pound 5'10" 24 y/o woman, can easily load and unload her kayak. Some things that I really like about this is the overall simplicity and price. It's a cheap solution for a simple problem and can be installed by one person with one tool in less than one hour. That's a win. I also really like the cushion on the hooks themselves. My girlfriend is one of those "don't scratch my baby" types and she has no problem roughly handling her kayak to get it on and off the hooks. The last thing that I really like is how the real estate in the hook area is more than enough for a kayak. When she has her kayak loaded, she also can hang her paddle on there in the space in front of the kayak. That contributes to the cool factor considering her kayak is now a piece of the living room wall decoration and keeps her paddle from being stuffed in a dusty old closet.Tips:1. Make sure that the screws going through the tubes go into the stud. The screws on the pad are just there for alignment but honestly, they don't seem to be doing a lot considering none of them are in a stud.2. For solo person loading and unloading, pick a low enough height per the persons height. For my girlfriend, that magic height was just beneath her chest. 4Not for taller kayaks...Not meant for taller sit on top kayaks. I own a Native Slayer Propel 10 and it wants to tip forward due to the shape of the these hooks. I had to add 1-1/2" spacer to the back of the bottom mounting plate to allow my kayak to lean back against the wall instead of falling forward and roll off the hangers. Also be careful of the screw that connect the upper and lower pieces of these hooks, they stick out about 3/8" and can scratch your plastic kayak if rubbed against it...like it did mine. I wish they would have added the screw on the side of the tube instead. I ended up drilling and mounting another screw on the side and use a dremmel tool to cut off the existing screw nipple that was sticking out. Nice hangers if your kayak is not as tall and sit nicely inside the 15" space, also your bottom hull is not rubbing against the screw stubs. 3Best for the money by far!Great product, with only very minor warts. Steel construction with adequate welds, with an indoor-worthy powder-coat finish. End caps are plastic, but cover the steel completely, and the foam seems sturdy enough. As other reviewers mentioned, the 12 screws in the mounting hardware are "meh," but with the $20 you're saving over almost any other option, you can buy $1.50 in square-drive stainless hardware and be worry-free. Do yourself the favor of taking the time to find wall studs for the two center holes! Though it's a 2-piece construction the screw holding the hangers together holds solid. My only complaint is that it could have been placed on the side to ensure that it doesn't scratch the boat finish (like the 8 coats of varnish on my wife's newly-made wooden kayak!). This should work for 99+% of users, if you take the time to find a stud, it'll be as solid as you could ask. 4Works for meI like these hangers. They work great to store our 2 kayaks. However, I wasn't loving the idea of hollow wall anchors, so I screwed two 2X4s into the wall studs, then mounted the hangers to them. I would recommend this method of attaching the hangers to the wall. As mentioned by many reviewers, the provided hardware is of poor quality. I tried one included screw and it bent and the head twisted off so I used some better screws I had on hand. No big deal but as often as this problem has been pointed out it's probably time for the seller to shoot the padlock off their checkbook and buy better fasteners.Anyway, good product at a good price. 4Space SaverThese brackets work just as we hoped they would. I can t believe we spent years with three kayaks piled on top of a couple wood blocks taking up so much space. Now they hang neatly and attractively on the side of the garage with easy access. Each of our kayaks vary in size and these brackets accommodated all just fine. We used the mounting screws included with no problem but as stated in some of the other reviews the screw that holds the upper pole to the curved hanger is a little long and sticks out. My husband made them shorter by grinding them down so the head is now flush with the pole but I don t think the small amount it protrudes would have posed much of an issue. We recommend this product!! 5Design flaw in the product that could hole your boat if used as intended.Design problem that can damage kayak. The screw that holds the two pieces together does not go all the way in to the housing due to it being about a quarter inch too long. Further, the housing for the screw itself actually protrudes some, so what you have is a 3/8 inch protrusion in two places (both racks) where the kayak should rest. That puts pressure in a small place and bends the material and could penetrate your boat under the right circumstances. I had no luck trying to contact the seller. My solution has been to lean the kayak forward and use bungee cords attached to screw eyes in rafters to make sure it stays forward. I think that I can grind off the screws to make them fit into the housing, but I am still faced with putting some sort of cushioning material over the joint so the kayak can rest leaning beck against the racks as intended. These racks should be a single piece without the joint. I would not buy them again, but I am going to try to make these work. 2For the Price - Buy It!This works great well for the cost. The comments about bad hardware may have been for prior hardware. What I received had decent hardware that works great in my fence posts. None of the screws broke during installation. My only qualm with this is the screws that put the lower and upper halves together. They are took long and thus stick out enough to cut into my kayak. Not a huge deal as I can either cut them shorter or drill out the back side of the hole. At the time, I was in a hurry and did not feel like doing the additional drilling. When spring comes around this will be a quick fix. For the money, this is absolutely worth it. 5Hooray floor spaceSolid construction, easy to assemble and hang. Includes some massive heavy duty drywall inserts that I didn't have to use (I'd be apprehensive about hanging kayaks from drywall). I installed two sets of these in my garage and within a few minutes of opening the boxes and not reading the instructions, my days of tripping over kayaks in the dark had ended. 5
