Customer Reviews
It's perfect
When I bought this I wasn't sure it would be that useful... but it is used almost daily... it pounds out chicken like a dream... the other thing it does is it breaks up frozen bagged veggies and fruit... with little effort on my old hands... this tool has made my life just that much easier. So very glad I bought it.
5This is a kitchen tool that was obviously NOT new
Box it came in was old cardboard; soft & spongy. Bubble wrap had little air left. Face of pounder had pits & scratches. This is a shorter version of my 1st review attempt that was rejected by Amazon on the grounds that "obscene or vulgar language is not allowed even for adult products." I used no bad language. I think my description of "soft" cardboard & "airless" bubble wrap triggered their oh-so-sophisticated algorithms. My point is I paid for a new KITCHEN tool & got an obviously not new KITCHEN tool.
1Best Pounder
This is by far the best meat pounder that I have owned. Loved it from the first time I used it. It is heavy, it it ergonomically correctand a real pleasure to work with it. You pay the price for it, but it's worth every penny. Highly recommended for serious chefs.
5Five Stars
This item is reviewed and recommended by the testers at America's Test Kitchen. It does it's job well.
5Comfortable and efficient pounder for meat, spices, and nuts
Works very well for pounding meat as well as cracking spices and nuts. Perfectly weighted and comfortable for someone like me with arthritis (hand, neck, shoulder) and smaller hands to hold. Much better for me to use than a mallet. I can pound 4 chicken breasts quickly without getting sore. Grip is easy to hold and my hands don't slip while pounding. I just throw it in the dishwasher and it still looks like new.I originally put spices in a quart freezer bag to pound on a cutting board... but it hacked up the plastic while pounding. A dishtowel over the freezer bag works much better.
5Pound, uh, tenderize your meat with this Norpro tool
My wife of over forty years left five months ago to live with another man, and, to my dismay, she took with her the hefty meat tenderizer I had grown to love; I used it to prepare 'tornadoes,' a flank steak dish that is a sure crowd pleaser. I searched Bed, Bath, and Beyond for another, but all they had were wimpy little hammers that did their work by smashing with cuboid projections. I wanted a heavy flat-bottomed tool and I found the Norpro tenderizer at Amazon. It weighs twenty-something ounces, like a framing hammer. This one feels sturdy and it works wonderfully. Five stars.
5Love it but $20?
I compared different models, shapes etc, and this was what I thought it would be the best. Definitely I don't regret the purchase. The perfect design for comfort and to achieve perfection, which is the most important. You'll have absolute control with this product. I used once and it was very easy to make my chicken breast completely and evenly flat. I thought it was going to be small, but it was ok. You just have to do few more strokes than if you got something bigger, but not a big deal. Mine came dented at the bottom flat part, not a huge deal either. Now as you see in the pictures, it is obviously not a solid piece. The plastic handle has a very good grip but it is made of a very cheap plastic. The metal disc is made of two parts, hollow and filled with iron. The iron filling is not so great, since it feels like you can bend it a bit all over the metal disc. There is a big gap, but I believe that is fairly well sealed. Having said that, I will discourage you to purchase this item if you're planing to beat the bare meat with this product. I use a freezer bag and is fine, but because of that gap, plus the gap on the handle, this product would be extremely unhygienic, even if you wash it in the dishwasher.I love it, but I can't believe the price, because is made like absolute junk. For $20 we should be getting a solid piece of metal. This should be priced at $7 the most.
3Weakling For What It Is
I'm not a fan of this product. I saw it on America's Test Kitchen and I should have known. It is what it is: a big flat heavy weight with a handle. Trouble is that there's no leverage so it requires a great deal of force to work - bruising your hand in the process. You may as well just use your fist. I donated this one and bought one with a long handle which works much better.
1Uniform Results--Works Great on Chicken Breasts. Worth the Price.
I'd put-off buying this pounder for a couple of years because it is expensive. I frequently pound boneless chicken breasts to 1/4" thickness and this device makes it easier to do that without breaking thru in the middle of the breast meat--a problem I frequently had with my hammer-style pounder. You do need a sturdy surface and need to not be afraid of really whacking the meat in order to get faster results. My girlfriend likes the hammer-style better than this one. I like this one the best and am glad I finally coughed-up the extra money for this nice kitchen tool.
5Unexpected Use
Wow, this thing works so much better than the old cleated hammer I used for many years. No holes and the pounded meat has much better integrity, plus it is much easier to use. I don't often make dishes like cordon blu, but I now use this pounder several times a week to mash garlic. Garlic is really good for you and I love the taste it adds to dishes. But it's such a hassle to crush it with the garlic press that I used to use (including cleanup) that most of the garlic I would buy would spoil before it was used. This little pounder smashes garlic in a jiffy and the cleanup is a snap. It's worth its small price just for that use, alone. The weight of this thing is perfect and the build quality is astounding. You can't loose with this product.
